VITAGEN Celebrates 40 Years in Championing Digestive Care

VITAGEN, Malaysia’s first and No. 1 cultured milk drink that has grown alongside generations of Malaysians, kick-started the celebration of its 40th anniversary with the introduction of its, ‘A Better Gut Begins with VITAGEN’ campaign, as an extension of the brand’s far-reaching digestive health education and awareness initiative.

Pioneer of the industry and custodian of digestive care, the iconic cultured milk drink has been an integral part of Malaysians’ everyday lives for 40 years. VITAGEN contains billions of good bacteria with live, active cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus casei. This formulation helps aid the absorption of nutrients from food and stimulates a stronger immune system. It also assists in suppressing the growth of harmful bacteria, reducing the risk of intestinal disturbances for optimal digestive health when consumed.

Good gut health is increasingly important as Malaysians face health challenges linked to sedentary lifestyles, stress and increasing consumption of fast food that may be low in fibre and low in good bacteria.

Studies have shown that gut health is linked to obesity. Malaysia has the dubious distinction of being among the fattest countries in the region. The prevalence of adults who are overweight is up to 30%. Obese Malaysians make up 17.7% of the total population. This combination means that almost half the country’s population are either overweight or obese.

Diseases of the digestive system, or gut, are listed as among the 10 principal causes of hospitalisation (9.14%) and death (3.81%)in private hospitals, while colorectal cancer is ranked as the second most common cancer among Malaysians at a high 12.1%.

Many ailments including stress, seemingly unrelated to the human digestive system are caused by gut problems. Understanding how the gut works and how to care for it is essential to overall wellbeing.

VITAGEN has been expanding its efforts to promote good gut health to Malaysians through on-going campaigns and activities aimed at creating awareness and forming healthy lifestyle habits about the importance of good gut health.

The brand is also catering to Malaysians with specific health and dietary preferences with reduced sugar and collagen variants.  Recently the VITAGEN Less Sugar variant was awarded the Healthier Choice logo under the Ministry of Health.

VITAGEN’s General Manager, Mr. Poh Eng Lip said, “Malaysians need to get healthy.  This year, we are employing different strategies and approaches because the traditional discourse of, ‘don’t do this or that because it is bad for you’ does not work with the younger generation.”

VITAGEN has been championing digestive care for the past 40 years through its popular school programmes, collaborations with organisations such as Digestive Health Malaysia and the Nutrition Society of Malaysia as well as sponsorship of sporting and entertainment events, among others.

VITAGEN’s campaign in conjunction with its 40th anniversary shows the positive correlation between good gut health and overall wellbeing through three key areas namely, improved immunity, greater mental clarity and a more balanced mood.

Sharing some of the brand’s plans to make good gut health more compelling to Malaysians, in line with VITAGEN’s 40th anniversary campaign, Mr. Poh added, “We have an exciting year ahead for VITAGEN. The events and activities surrounding our outreach are backed by research that better gut health improves overall wellbeing.”

Sweet O Success

Failures and regrets; I have a few but then again, too few to mention. But yet, I do have an accolade of achievements that I really proud of.

During school days; for most of us, I believe the achievements and success stories would be like scoring straight As, getting top in the class and won some competitions. Academically, well, I wasn't the dumbest person in the class, I scored pretty well ok? Achieving academic result was a piece of cake.

As you enter the battlefield of working   environment, achievement and success stories are rather difficult to be written since it's a real world. There's a Chinese saying "it takes three years to yield three minutes of fame on the stage". That saying simply testifies the amount of effort and dedication before you reap what you sow in your work.

Well, I do feel proud of my work so far, be it in my old agency or new agency. Sometimes I couldn't expect myself that I could produce that successful results. It is a great humility indeed.

However, every time I did a great job, at the end of the day, I would feel emotional about it. I felt like that I need to break the news to someone and share the joy and celebrate about it. I wanted to share it in FB but I refuse to coz hardly people know what Public Relations is all about. And I didn't want to create attention in Facebook.

Strange right? I should be happy and proud. My pride will be written in my cv but the hidden joy is the main issue here.I don't know how to express it nor I know how to share it.

I hope I won't be a drifter. But I won't be satisfied every key results that I have achieved. As the achievement is attained, it is my natural instinct to raise the bar even higher to achieve even higher result. That's why it's hard to be little Alvin coz I never satisfied.

This Is Us

I have something to confess, yes, I'm an one directioner!

Being a huge fan, I wouldn't miss the 1D This Is Us 3D movie. Though it wasn't that good as the Katy Perry movie but I had a good time watching it and it was inspirational too!

If you didn't know, if wasn't Simon Cowell, there would be no One Direction today.

Apparently, the lads joint the X Factor reality series in UK back in 2010. They had the audition individually but they didn't make the cut when it came to the boys selection.

However, it was Simon who grouped Harry, Zayn, Niall, Liam and Louis together and made them into an entity in the competition. That is how one direction came about.

They didn't win the competition but the fans went crazy over them and the rest is history.

From no one (actually, Harry was a baker boy initially) to international stardom; how twist of fate could change one's life.

Reflecting my life right now, well, not to say perfect but I'm contented. I know life is in palm of your hands but sometimes we need divine intervention to lead the way.

Like recently, I quit my job without any offers backing me up. I wasn't scared because I had the faith. I asked Lord -"please grant me a job". And my prayers had been answered and not only I've got the offer but the offer is from the agency that I really look forward to.

Even my tertiary education - I wasn't born rich so I had to rely on public universities but our sad education system  put me into some unknown uni.

So I applied partial scholarship from Taylor's . But it was two days too late to submit, so I had to wait another sem in another year. But praise The Lord, I received the sweetest phone call amidst the disappointment.

"Alvin, the (some big shot) will be in Ipoh doing roadshow, you can pass to him directly and expedite the process and put you in the sem which will be commenced next month" Taylor's

And I've got my partial scholarship to study PR  and now I'm a PR practitioner in a MNC agency.

Sometimes, you think it's over but it's not. It's not the end for you. What over is the path that you are traveling and subsequently you have to move to the next path. I believe if you have the faith, I believe the next path will be a blissful one.

P/S : I know I sound bimbo here but Zayn Malik is my favorite member of One Direction. He's so cute and so sweet! Well, he came from a single parent family and when he successfully earned his first gold from 1D, he fulfilled his promise to his family and bought his mom a brand new house. Aww....

A Note for Interviewee

For the first timers who are going for job interview, I bet that you will Google search those job interview dos and don'ts. Well, it may useful for you but if you have years of experience, do you still that tips?

Really, if you have the experience, trust me, there are only three things you need to explain to your interviewee, your experience,  your job scope and your expected salary. That's it.

I'm not bragging but praise The Lord that I was given so many opportunities throughout the job hunting period. Some I applied myself and some through head hunters. And I'm really humble that big names in IT industry (Apple's arch rival)and media industry approached me.

There are load of interview tips for candidates out there but have you read any single tip from the candidates for the interviewees? I think i had been enduring more than 10 interviews, let me share what interviewees should take notes so the interview will proceed smoothly.

READ and RE-READ the resume

So I was invited to this interview, the brand is very popular with its laptops and performed poorly in its smartphone segment (it starts with A and second and last letter in four letters word is the same).

I did an IQ test during the interview, I think I did fairly good. Then proceed to the interview, suddenly, the interviewee dropped the bombshell "you know we are looking someone who knows how to write and read Chinese- even the people here speak in mandarin". WTF, I felt like she was wasting my time and I wanted to give my knuckle to her face. Bitch, in my résumé I explicitly stated "write Chinese 0 and read Chinese 0".

Sad right, Chinese looking down on Chinese. I'm not sure it was just coincidence or this A brand is a plain racist company. Few months back, I accompanied my friend, who is not my race, to get a laptop at its dealer in mid valley. So my friend paid with his Big debit card, and apparently, the dealer didn't want to swipe his card and requested cash instead as something wrong with the system. Strange, few hours ago can swipe through and suddenly system down. Was it due to my friend  from different race and didn't trust him that he was the cardholder?

Bring Your HR along

I admire some of my interviewees brought their HR counterpart along as the staff benefits and even salary will be under HR judiciary so the interview won't be left hanging with void of info. Unless, the person is all rounded on the policy of the company.Maybe lack of collaboration between HR, I heard this phrase several times " you can check with HR but HR person is not here".

Prepare a list of questions

Come on, people applied leave for an interview, don't waste time to think what to ask next. Really, there was an interview with two interviewees and they didn't have a strong structure or approach on what to ask. So there were uncomfortable cricket moments until I had to break the ice and ask questions.

We have work to do

"Mr Alvin, I just received your résumé. Can you come for an interview with us tomorrow" .

We can't simply take emergency leave the next day and abandon our work just to attend interview. Why not give us a week or two to arrange?

Before I end this entry, I would like to congratulate for those who decided to venture for a new job and quitting the current one. Quitting your job doesn't mean that you are loser (in the context you have been working with same company more than a year) but you have realized that there are platforms out there for you to achieve your career goal. And of course, you have realized what you want to do in life and what you love to do. Sacrifices are inevitable but for the sake of your career goal, why not?

From Meow To Roar

Three years ago, few days before Christmas to be precise, I stepped into the public relations industry.

Totally with zero experience in this industry, it was really a struggle for me at the beginning of my career. I didn't even have the experience to draft a press release that not only catered for my clients but for the media as well.

But time flies, I have been in this industry for three years plus now, so it's safe to say I have the fundamental of pr skills and thank god that I have built a good rapport relationship both with my clients and the media.

For those who want to venture in this industry, let me tell you this, it ain't easy. There will be no 9-6 pm and though you may have your weekend but most of my weekend I spend with my work at home so the next working week won't be loaded. Multitasking skills are tested, stress level is sky high and expectation is high.

I know I scare you off from the paragraph above but if you have the passion for public relations, I'm sure you will enjoy it . Trust me, whenever you see the coverage, you will love the satisfaction.

If you didn't know, 23 of August was my last day at my workplace. If you follow my blog religiously, you know that I quit without a offer. I know it was a risky decision so kids please really think twice if you really wanna quit without any offer.

So aimlessly and without any sense of direction, I was lost in my career path. This little kitten was straying in the corporate street looking for a decent job. Only equipped with experience and faith, one by one, this little kitten did its interview across different companies and
agencies but there was no feedback.

However ,this little kitten is set to change from meow to loud roar!

Yes, I have an offer. So let me take two weeks break. I shall return in PR industry very soon with a roar!

What's next? Heartbreak kid?

I wanted to sleep early actually coz tomorrow it is really huge day for me. But the excitement keeps me awake.

Tomorrow (Monday) will be my last media event with my company. And guess who will be attending my event? Yes, my idol and one of the greatest musicians in Chinese entertainment industry, yes, i'm talking about Jay Chou.

Now you know why i didn't buy any ticket for the concert coz i will meet him tomorrow, why would i waste money right?

I'm very delighted that my idol Jay Chou will be concluding my last media event with my current company. So what's the plan next for me?

Well, few days after that i'll be having Raya break and few weeks after that i'll be jobless. Sad right? Until now i still don't have any offer though the interview appointments are aplenty.

Aside from aiming to get a job by September, i don't have any plan installed for me after i end my one month notice period. Thought of travelling but i don't dare to do so coz I'm not sure until when i'll be jobless, so it's good to save up more.

What a daredevil right? Resign without an offered job.

My BFF asked me whether I'm scared or worried that i'll be jobless.

To be honest, i'm really worried. Though i have the faith but what if the faith doesn't favour me?

Well, worry will be useless in times like this. So live life to the fullest. I know nobody says that life is easy but life is short, we don't know what will happen next. Who knows i'll be shot dead when i step out from the house.

So here i am, at the crossroad again and ask myself what i really want in life.

One thing for sure, i will never quit the media industry because i'm so passionate about it and it is so vibrant. I know media industry will never work 9 to 6 but if you love the career so much, time is not an issue.

Okay, Alvin, aside from career, what you want in your life?

I know i can't have family and kids coz i'm living in an alternative lifestyle. I guess my life will be pretty lonely ahead as my girl friends will eventually get married someday and my gay friends will settle down with their partners.

Material aside, i want 'home' , 'love' and 'family'. Maybe you share the desire with me coz ultimately - these three things are the ones who will accompany you until you die.

Okay, i'm being too decent here. I'm not quite a believer in true love in gay relationship. If true love doesn't happen sooner or later - why not I succeed in my career undertaking and achieve five figures every month, or close to it. With all the materials in the world and the figures in my account, then eureka, i could be a heart break kid and a player.

I'm not joking, you see, we always be the heart broken ones, why not we rise up and say no more to heart breaks and tears and transform ourselves to be a jerk and fling around like Taylor Swift does. Accumulate all the cuties or the people like to flash off in Facebook, and have a helluva good time in dating and on the bed of course. And yeah, the gay guys who like to show their tetek (tits) in the public. Im not joking, nowadays I see a lot of fit guys wearing revealing singlets until can see their tits.

Like what the hell? Tits are so sexually sacred and they reveal their tetek in the public. I bet 10 years soon, they will reveal their dick head.

I'm so sorry for my indecency. But that's my little disturbing fantasy and desire.

I don't know what life ahead will bring me but I know there is God above who always guide me and never forsake me like the song below 'I surrender all of me to You so my soul will be peaceful with Your guidance"

One of my favourite song from one of my favourite female local singers - Ku Mohon, Sheila Majid

I've resigned

Sorry as I've been hiding from you guys for a week now.

For past one week, it was not an easy period for me as I've decided to take a bold step to tender my resignation. You might think that I'm leaving for better offer but this isn't the case.

Yes, I'm leaving my current job without any next job installed for me. That's right, I'll be jobless in end of next month after serving my one month notice period.

I know this is a very risky and unwise move that I ever took in my career as I could not guarantee that I will have a job after month notice.

Why I resign?

It has been three years and a half I've been attached to my current company. Indeed, it has been a valuable learning ground for me to groom myself to be a Public Relations practitioner. I'm very proud that I could have the golden opportunities to handle big international brands which would polish my résumé/portfolio for my career advancement.

But three years have passed, job scope  has become mundane, career path has become stagnant and corporate ladder is not there for me to climb anymore. I've been spending too much time in my comfort zone.

I still execute my obligations and responsibilities for my clients but without any fire and passion in me anymore. I know the best practice is to leave when you have secured the next job but I defied the common recommended practice and resigned because it has reached my threshold and I could not go further anymore.

Please respect my decision.Absolutely no regrets and please move on with me.

For those who are in the dilemma of thinking want to quit or not, let me tell you this, quitting doesn't mean you are loser if you have tried your best or even you have achieved so much and gained so many valuable experiences. When you think you have enough, it's time to move on my dear.

If you're so afraid to take the chances, how you gonna to reach the top? The success favors the bold.

Try to have no regrets when you have already made your thorough decision and honor your decision. If you stuck at the same position of your career advancement and you think that you deserve more, if you have no liabilities, just quit. There's a whole world out there waiting for you to explore. I know what's in me and you is out there.

Each step is the hardest, you gotta be patient. I know you will make it.

I still love PR and communication industry , so if you know any related vacancy, please do inform me.

Before i end my entry, here is a little divine quote for you:

Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning - Trust Him

Safe and Sound

There are times when you're so vulnerable that you want to cover yourself with your blanket and forget the world outside.

Not to the extend that i cover myself literally but nowadays i feel vulnerable. Perhaps, the uncertainties and even  clueless mind of mine has evoked this uninvited vulnerabilities.

What about you? What are the causes that you will feel vulnerable? Work stress? Relationship problem? Broke? Unwanted? Or you were just born for being vulnerable.

You see, we are just little creature on the bare land with vultures above the sky which waiting for you to fall on the ground.

The road ahead ain't easy. There's always someone who disapproves you no matter how hard you have tried. The phrase 'I believe in myself" starts to be doubtful when everything is not going well according to your way or what you have planned. Does it mean give up and start helluva again? How much effort does it cost to reach the threshold?

The vultures will never fail to keep an eye on you. They will judge you you like they know me and you. Even the eyes of the passer by will put their verdict on you.

You may take this entry as your work related stress, college dramas, politics at office or even your relationship. But one thing for sure and i can tell you that, everything will be alright.Just try your best, try everything you can. You know you are doing better on your own, live right now - it doesn;t matter if it's good for someone else.

I miss the word "everything will be alright". Seriously, i wish that i could have someone to say that magical line to me. But look at me, just stuck in the four corners wall and write this very sad blog.Maybe i should fling with some random guy..no no, i will look like a whore or Taylor Swift then.

I like serious relationship but i really hate love sick thing. Don't fantasize so much. July is coming (the month i always got hooked up), so i just patiently await for the love bug to crawl over me.(for second time, i'm not a desperado nor a whore)

Here is the song for you by the whore, i mean Taylor Swift. You will be alright.

Steady hands, just take the wheel

Have you ever have a little pause and ask yourself where are you right now?

Yes, you are reading my blog in front of your laptop or smartphone.

I mean seriously, do you know where you at and do you know where you're heading to in your career path?

Seriously, i never thought ever in my life i could end up being a Public Relations practitioner. I'm not a well-converse kinda person, i mean verbally. But look at me now, I'm a worn out boy handling international and big brands. Big brands never come easy, i'm like a sugarcane in a crushing machine - oozing all my energy out to meet the high demands of those brands. Complain not, i guess you and i share the same fate also, we are just plain sugarcanes which are ready to be crushed.

Actually, i'm not a good planner in my career but i know what is my strength, what is my forte, what is my weakness and what i want for my next job.

It seems that most of my friends are changing their jobs now whereas for me, I'm still at the same old company. Well, not complaining because without this company, i wouldn't be who i am today.

But being said that, i hope i won't spend my sweet time in my comfort zone - it's about time to inch out.I always tell myself that my next job is for career advancement, salary is secondary. Do you share the same sentiment with me?

What is the main factor or factors that drive you to change your job? Career advancement? Higher pay? Horrible bosses? Too stressful? Too bored?

Whatever it is, I know i should be proud but i feel really humble instead, sometimes unbelievable that i'm approached by really huge big companies. Like seriously, me? Bitch please, i'm the one you're looking for hahaha....

Too early to have a clue on what my next job will be, who knows that I'll be staying put at my current company.

Before i end my note, i wanna share with you guys, few weeks ago, i was verbally attacked in Facebook for commenting my own opinion. In his verbal attack, he belittled me that i came from a small town that i'm such a dumb ass and know nothing about big city like Kuala Lumpur (though i've been staying in KL for seven years now)-he asked me to go back to Ipoh. My town might be small compared to KL but little did he know that my little small town Ipoh produces so many prominent names - Michelle Yeoh, Michael Wong, Jack Lim, Amy Mastura, Baki Zainal, Lat - to name a few.

I didn't retaliate, i just deleted off his Facebook. Little did he know that this little kid from small town is handling international brands. I can't wait to add him back and let him see my job description ( or new job description) in my Facebook.

Actually, i'm very stressed right now and my sister ditches me for some other guys (i know i will be killed for saying this) so here is the song for you and me, no matter how stressed up with our work, we still need to carry on. Like what Nate sings "Cause we are, we are shining stars, we are invincible, we are who we are on our darkest day when we're miles away, so we'll come, we will find our way home"

Everything will be alright

Do you know where you're going to?

"I need to talk to you"

You know it is never good when your parents say those words to you. Coupled with this line:

“I have discussed with your dad”

Okay, now i'm dead.

Gosh, they found out my dirty little secret?Well, it was just false alarm but it did drag me to the junction of life.

You see, my parents have given me a period of time to see whether this current job of mine  is worth for my future. Sadly, they see my job is taking me no way and it’s cause of worry for them.

Indeed, they woke me up and now I really do think is this I really want to do. I feel tired. I feel all worn out. The environment used to be a fun playground but lately, it is just a lair for me that I will never have a chance to get out.

I'm not sure the long three years at the same old company is making my working environment is so mundane. Or maybe PR is not really my thing. Geez, i'm not young anymore and i'm still musing over my career path.

I do wish could go back to journalism and editorial but im afraid that i don't have that flair in English.

Maybe i should hold on tight on PR line since i have three years experience which is making me a valuable asset in the market. With that experience, i could be an assistant manager or a PR manager for Pete's sake. Perhaps, i should consider to quit agency-based to in-house PR so i could be more focus.

However, whatever my choice will be, i definitely won't quit this media line. It's fun, vibrant and takes hell load of shit to make things work to look beautiful on the outside.

I do admire people who have strong direction on what they really want in their career path. For me, i still feel insecure on what i'm doing right now. The big 3 O is coming soon, and i'm still fulfill the promises that i have made for myself - (

Don't frown too much. It's Christmas. Talking about Yuletide, now i realize i don't have Christmas tree in my room this year. I'm really busy to set up a Christmas tree this year. Really, i didn't even realize Christmas is just days away.

Maybe i save it for next year. I still remember that last year, there was someone special who helped me to set up my Christmas tree. Come to think of it, it was pretty sweet experience. Alas, he is helping his partner to set up the Christmas tree now; jealous and weeping!

Every year, in fact when i was small i wanted to go to Disneyland to celebrate Christmas. Almost happened but it didn't happen for twice now; 2011 and 2012. I'm not sure who will be so kind to bring me there in 2013 and be heartless eventually by breaking the promise.

Shoudln't be complain too much, should be thankful to God that i'm still writing this entry on 22nd December 2012. I guess the Mayans have fooled us all.

Before i end my note, let me share this music video. I remember when i was really small, my mom bought me a VHS tape on Disney Christmas Sing Along Special and that's when i fell in love with Disney. My innocent intention to go to Disneyland started at tender age of five when i first started to watch the video clip below:

Merry Christmas everyone.

Public Relations: Agony Vacancy

Every now and then, I receive notifications from Job Street on vacancy for Public Relations or Communication Executive post. Don’t  speculate, just that I subscribed to that website long time ago so, they still email me any updates for vacancy.

Finally, I take the initiative to check my mail today and dear lord,  it is flooded by porno spams, Groupon deals and job vacancies from Job Street.

The job description and job responsibilities do really somehow make me laugh because it is so diplomatic!
They usually like to use these phrases: fast expanding..handling international brands..looking for passionate and motivated people, develop press release…develop media relations….

To the young ones who are about to step into public relations industry, please don’t be deceived by the diplomatic words in the job description because the job description doesn’t describe the whole picture of the insurmountable responsibilities in PR.  PR is either hell or if you are lucky enough, it will be your paradise.

If I ever have a PR agency or I have the blessing to take control of the recruitment, I won’t be that diplomatic, instead, I’ll be a meanie and bitchy. I’ll write the job description or rather tips for the potential candidates in this manner:

  1.  Capable to churn out three press releases and three speeches in a week
  2.  Able to sleep for four hours and drive down to airport to catch the earliest flight and return on the same date on the latest flight and go to work the next day
  3.  Outdo GPRS or Google Map because you can’t rely on them all the time
  4. Take Google as your best friend – trust me, Google does wonders
  5.  Good in crapping intelligently – you’re a spinner, so you have to make people believe that the Sun rise in the West and not East
  6.   Do not say don’t know – either you really don’t know or you don’t have effort to gain more knowledge
  7. Be positive for the ruling government even if you pro-opposition as you will deal with many government officials and ministers along the way
  8. Fasih bertutur dalam Bahasa Melayu as Malay media is huge in Malaysia
  9. Good health – skipping meal, meeting the datelines with running nose and sleep late are the norms, so make sure your body can endure it
  10. Can endure hot scorching sun for hours with make up and formal dress
  11. Good in remembering faces and names
  12. Do not offend people even they are nasty as somehow you will work with them someday
  13. Know your public and school holidays well as you don’t want to have an event during the holiday season as most media will be on leave
  14. Be social network friendly – seriously, please don’t end up yourself in Paradigm Mall fiasco
  15. Be polite as politeness does work sometimes
  16. Don’t be proud on your good command of vocabulary  but be humble and unleash your good ideas-I know good command of English will look good on you but those high and difficult vocab will annoy the editors – just make it simple and nice
  17. Know the celebrities well – seriously, you don’t want to recommend a controversial artiste to endorse a brand right?
  18. Able to make endless phone calls to endless people for the same question “Are you coming for our event”?
  19. Lighten up sometimes – I know the job is hard and formal sometimes but take a little space to make fun sometimes
  20. Imagine yourself as the Goddess of Thousand Hands or a squid as you need to multi task a lot like handling four accounts at the same time
  21.  Be two-faced
